Plain-language privacy / this learning edition

Explore without handing over your life.

You can use the learning activities without giving your name, picture, location, or browsing history. The optional campaign builder uses public campaign details.

How the labs work

Games and settings run in your browser’s memory while the page is open. The learning games do not save a personal learning profile. Optional Google Analytics runs only after you allow it, as explained below. Reset or leave a page to clear the activity state.

Optional Google Analytics

GotData.info uses Google Analytics (G-22TFKXX43K) to help NDS understand which pages people use. Analytics is off until you choose “Allow analytics.” You can choose “No thanks” and keep using the site. Use “Analytics choices” in the footer to change your choice.

The Google tag runs only on public pages at gotdata.info or www.gotdata.info. It does not run on the private preview, owner inboxes, or API routes. After you allow it, Google may use first-party analytics cookies and receive page-use, browser, device, and technical connection information. Google processes this information under its own policies.

Our analytics setup uses fixed page titles, removes query strings and fragments from page URLs, and sends only the origin of a referring website. It does not add your name, email, poll answers, form text, uploaded images, submission references, or public campaign-link details to custom analytics events. Advertising consent remains denied, and advertising personalization is disabled.

Your analytics choice is saved in this browser’s local storage. Choosing “No thanks” stops future collection through this setup and clears readable Google Analytics cookies for this site. It does not erase information already received by Google. Analytics retention and account settings are managed in the owner’s Google Analytics account. Because analytics is optional, its reports do not count every visitor.

Read Google’s privacy policy ↗ and how Google uses information from partner sites ↗. Families can keep analytics off while using the lessons.

Public campaign links

The optional campaign builder asks for a candidate name, office or race, slogan, election date, and a for-or-against position. It puts those details in a reusable public link. They are not encrypted. Anyone with the link can read the details and make an edited copy. Use public campaign information only.

Creating a link does not submit a campaign record to the poll or inquiry database. Removing the banner from your current view does not erase links or images already shared. Hosting and social services may retain copies of shared URLs and previews. Campaign details are supplied by the creator, not verified by GotData.info. Lab sponsorship does not imply candidate endorsement.

Got Data? image entries

The optional image challenge is for adults 18 and older. It collects your chosen public credit, email, title, short data story, image creation method, one image, rights and consent confirmations, entry terms version, a reference, and submission time. We use these to review the entry, contact you about it, and publish selected work under the entry terms. Your email is not part of the public gallery. This is separate from the data-review inquiry and community poll.

On the Netlify edition, the image entry and uploaded file go to Netlify Forms for owner review. Uploaded images may be accessible to anyone who has their direct file URL. Submit only work suitable for public sharing; do not upload private records.

The gallery currently displays NDS-supplied campaign illustrations. Viewing, rotating, downloading, and sharing them does not submit an entry or add a public vote. Share buttons use your browser or device share tools and social services have their own privacy rules. No share, view, or contest vote count is claimed.

NDS may publish selected images, titles, stories, and public credits on this learning site and related promotional social posts under the image challenge terms. Entries do not join an email marketing list. No automatic retention deadline is set. Request correction or removal through the inquiry form using your entry reference and entry email. Copies shared by other people may remain.

The adult inquiry form

If you submit the data review form, this edition stores your name, email, optional organization, file description, broad coverage, approximate size, question, confirmations, inquiry source, timestamp, and a reference ID in a private database. The form does not upload files.

NDS can use that information to review the inquiry and discuss a possible project. Do not include sensitive records. Submitting does not create a contract or confidentiality agreement. Access and project terms must be agreed separately.

The community poll

The optional poll is for adults 18 and older. It saves a five-digit ZIP code, views on a hypothetical nearby data center, a selected priority, adult and permission confirmations, the chosen lab settings, a form version, and submission time. It does not ask for your name, email, exact address, or location from your device.

Responses help NDS understand community views and may support combined reporting. Individual poll records are not shown publicly. This is a voluntary, self-selected poll, not a scientific sample or an official permit vote. Multiple responses are possible; we do not claim one verified person per response.

On the Netlify edition, poll responses and project inquiries are processed by Netlify Forms and reviewed in the private site dashboard. Netlify may process technical information for hosting and spam prevention under its own policies.

Keeping and deleting inquiries

There is no automatic retention deadline for submitted inquiries or poll responses in this edition. For a correction or deletion request, use the inquiry form with your previous reference ID and the email you used. Do not include new private records. The request will need to be reviewed by NDS.

Links and hosting

Outside portals have their own privacy rules. This site loads its magazine image locally. The hosting service may process technical request information needed to deliver and protect the site. If a sign-in is required to open the preview, the host handles that account process.

For families

Children can use the lessons without submitting personal information. The business inquiry, community poll, and image challenge are for adults 18 and older. The pretend ad lab shows a concept; it does not inspect real interests or activity on other sites.

Questions or concerns

Adults can send a short privacy question through the inquiry form. No email automation or response deadline is promised.
