Practical intelligence systems / grades 3–4

Facts help. Systems connect them.

Intelligence can mean learning what facts tell us so we can make a useful choice. A system is the people, steps, records, and tools that do this work together.

An intelligence system can work without AI. Maps, math, clear rules, and careful people can turn records into answers.

Start with the job, then choose a tool

Three different ideas.

THE WHOLE JOB

An intelligence system

Ask a question. Gather facts. Check them. Study them. Share an answer. Learn what happened.

Example: Help a town see where a public service may be missing.

A PLACE TOOL

GIS

A Geographic Information System connects facts to places. It can measure, compare, and make maps.

Example: Put roads and libraries on one map.

AN OPTIONAL METHOD

AI

Artificial intelligence can help find patterns in many records or pictures. Its answers need checks.

Example: Flag possible new roads in images for a person to review.

A pretend example / ordinary math works

Which town needs a closer look?

Town A has 2 public help centers for 10,000 people. Town B has 1 for 10,000 people.

A simple rule flags Town B for review. A map can help the team check roads and travel distances.

No AI was needed to count, divide, compare, or apply that rule.

One process / many useful results

From a record to a real decision.

  1. 01

    Ask

What do people need to know?

  2. 02

    Gather & check

Where did the facts come from? Are they current?

  3. 03

    Connect

Match the place, date, and meaning.

  4. 04

    Study

Count, compare, map, or use a tested model.

  5. 05

    Explain & decide

Show the evidence, limits, and choices.

  6. 06

    Learn & update

    Did it help? What changed?

AI may help with a step. It does not replace the whole system.

Different questions / different reach

The names tell us different things.

These ideas can overlap. They are not steps toward a “smarter” machine.
NameSmall meaningA useful question
Geospatial intelligence systemBring place facts and analysis together to answer a useful question.Which communities may need a closer service study?
National systemA system that works across one country. National tells us its reach. Can we compare places using the same rules?
International or global systemWork across countries, or look at the whole world.Do country records use the same dates and meanings?
Earth system scienceStudy how air, water, land, ice, and life affect each other. How can rain change rivers and farms?
NSDIThe U.S. sharing framework of people, rules, standards, and place-data tools. How can many groups use place data together?
GeoAIUse AI methods with place data. This is one set of methods.Could a tested model help find features in many images?

GEOINT has a formal U.S. national-security meaning. NGA describes work that brings imagery and place information together. Civil maps, journalism, and business analysis also use place facts. NDS’s public-interest work does not claim to be part of a government intelligence agency.

A real public-sector direction

Government already connects place facts.

FGDC / 2026–2027 PLANS

Help more systems work together.

The Federal Geographic Data Committee lists work on shared rules, connected catalogs, foundation data, and AI research.

AI is one part of that larger effort. The page lists planned work, not proof that every tool is finished.

For grown-ups: what did we verify about the date?

Checked October 17, 2026. Commerce’s Data and reports page links its FY2021–2024 geospatial strategy. We did not verify a Commerce promise to launch a new “geospatial intelligence system” in FY2026 or FY2027. The separately linked FGDC initiative covers 2026–2027. We keep these records and dates separate.

From the owner’s work / National Data System

This is what the NDS family is building.

NDS describes its work as dataset → index → product → story → presentation → public intelligence. In small words: collect the facts, make useful measures, build a tool, and explain what people can learn.

A domain is a doorway. The value behind it comes from checked records, methods, tools, and reporting.

Housing / owner-reported live project

GeospatialRealEstate.com

The question: How do Texas homes compare by place, price, size, and price per square foot?

The work: The owner’s project uses RentCast housing records and a Texas housing DuckDB. Maps and comparison rules connect the records.

Useful result: Explore housing patterns and compare listings. A map and a calculation do not need AI.

Publishing / owner-supplied example

Consumer Magazine

The question: What do the records mean for everyday life?

The work: Data journalism joins checked records, analysis, maps, and reporting. ConsumerMagazine.US tells the story; Consumer.info connects readers to the evidence.

Useful result: A story readers can understand and question.

Infrastructure / owner-described assets

U.S. + international place backbones

The question: What can we learn inside a country, rather than from one country average?

The work: NDS describes U.S. and international DuckDB place assets. Shared geographic keys help connect local and country records when their dates and meanings fit.

Useful result: A base for place profiles, comparisons, and new questions.

Project framework / owner material

Guatemala / GTM-003

The question: Where should a team study food, farming, work, and local needs more closely?

The work: The supplied NDS framework describes geographic prioritization using evidence and local checks. It names Alta Verapaz, Huehuetenango, and Quiché for priority review, with San Marcos as an expansion candidate.

Useful result: An owner-described planning framework. It does not prove outcomes or provide current area rankings.

GotData.info + HVAC.info

The question: What changes when a data center uses different cooling settings?

The work: The lab uses clear formulas for computer power, building energy, and on-site water. HVAC.info is the cooling-learning branding partner.

Useful result: A teaching comparison people can check. It is a simulation, not a forecast for a proposed site.

Domain inventory / possible application

ZIPCodeIntelligence.com + USConsumerAtlas.com

The question: How could useful place profiles be organized for readers?

The work: These names appear in the owner’s domain inventory. The place-data backbone and checked methods could support focused tools behind them.

Useful result: A possible product path. Owning a domain does not mean a finished service is available.

Explore the domain inventory ↗

Examples use the owner’s NDS platform material, domain inventory, and project descriptions. Coverage and publication status vary by project. These learning pages do not query the private U.S. or international DuckDB files. No government partnership or measured project impact is claimed.

One network / distinct jobs

Build the evidence. Tell the story.

Think like a builder

Connect two questions. Check the link.

Housing + health

Could housing conditions and nearby services help explain a local need?

Childcare + work

Do opening times fit the hours that parents work?

Data centers + utilities

Can power, cooling, and water plans meet local needs?

Two things happening together can be a clue. It does not prove that one caused the other. Check the sources and ask local people.

The question corner

Systems, in plain words.

Does an intelligence system need artificial intelligence?

No. People can connect records, use maps, count, compare, and apply clear rules without AI. AI is one possible method inside a larger system. A useful system also needs a question, checked facts, responsible people, and a way to learn from results.

Is GIS the same as GeoAI?

GIS connects and studies facts about places. GeoAI uses AI methods with place facts. A GIS can work without an AI model.

Does national intelligence always mean a government intelligence agency?

No. In this learning site, national often means a whole-country view. Government intelligence agencies have specific duties. National Data System’s public-interest data and publishing work does not claim to be part of those agencies.

How does Consumer Magazine use data journalism?

In the NDS family, Consumer Magazine turns checked records and analysis into stories for everyday decisions. Reporting should explain the sources, method, dates, places, and limits. A catchy cover question is a starting point, not proof of its answer.

Did Commerce promise a new geospatial intelligence system by FY2026 or FY2027?

We did not verify that exact deadline. Commerce links a FY2021–2024 geospatial strategy describing existing systems and goals. FGDC separately lists 2026–2027 spatial data infrastructure modernization activities. A plan is not proof that a system has launched.
