What is data?
Data are facts we can save. A price, a time, a name, or a map point can be data.
What is a dataset?
It is a group of facts about a topic. A table of bus stops and their times is one example.
What is the difference between a dataset and a data center?
A dataset is information. A data center is a place with computers that save information and do work.
Is the cloud really in the sky?
No. Cloud services run on real computers. You reach them over a network.
Announcing Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) – beta ↗Why do companies want data?
Facts can help them plan, find waste, build tools, and learn what people may need. The facts must be useful and used with the right permission.
UPS To Enhance ORION With Continuous Delivery Route Optimization ↗IBM Plans to Acquire The Weather Company's Product and Technology Businesses ↗Can free public data help build a business?
Yes, it can be a starting point. People can add skill, checks, tools, and support. Each source has its own rules.
Fifty Years of Landsat: Observing Earth to Look Forward ↗Data.gov User Guide ↗Is data on my hard drive worth money?
Maybe. It depends on its quality, how current it is, what it can answer, and the right to use it. A review comes before a claim of value.
Can we compare any two countries?
We can ask a common question. But the dates, borders, units, and meaning of each number must match. Some facts may be missing.
Does a bigger dataset always mean a better answer?
No. A large file can still have wrong facts or leave people out. The right facts for the question matter.
Develop SI model — SI in AM ↗Can AI make mistakes?
Yes. AI can learn the wrong pattern or give a wrong answer. People need to test and check its work.
Develop SI model — SI in AM ↗Did a company pay billions for one spreadsheet?
The deals shown here bought businesses or named business assets. Teams, tools, customers, brands, and rights were part of the story.
Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn ↗Salesforce Signs Definitive Agreement to Acquire Tableau ↗IBM 2016 Annual Report — Note C: Acquisitions/Divestitures ↗Where can I find public data?
Start with official government sources. Data.gov is a catalog of links to data. The agency that made a dataset keeps and updates the data itself.
Data.gov User Guide ↗What should I check before using a dataset?
Check who made it, when it was made, what place it covers, the rules for using it, and what may be missing.
Data.gov User Guide ↗Is the cloud really in the sky?
No. It is a name for services that use computers in other places. Those computers sit in buildings and need power.
Data Centers: County regulation and community questions ↗Do all data centers use the same amount of water?
No. Size, cooling choices, and weather matter. Ask for the real site's water plan.
2024 United States Data Center Energy Usage Report ↗Is water taken the same as water consumed?
No. Water taken is the amount drawn from a source. Water consumed is the part not ready to return for immediate use, such as water that becomes vapor.
Water Science Glossary ↗Does a data center always need a public hearing?
No. Some uses already fit the land rules. Others need special approval. Ask the local planning office what process applies.
Sale of County-Owned Land at 3721 Stonecroft Boulevard ↗Data Centers: County regulation and community questions ↗Will a data center bring lots of lasting jobs?
It can bring jobs. Building jobs and ongoing jobs are different. Ask how many of each are expected.
Data Centers in Virginia ↗Are cookies always bad?
No. A cookie may help a cart or login work. Other uses help track visits. A parent can review the site's choices and browser settings.
How Websites and Apps Collect and Use Your Information ↗Can companies' guesses about me be wrong?
Yes. A pattern is a clue. It is not proof of who you are or what you need.
FTC Recommends Greater Transparency and Consumer Control Over Data Brokers ↗Does removing a name make a dataset safe to share?
Not always. Exact places, times, and other clues may still point to a person.
FTC Cracks Down on Mass Data Collectors: Avast, X-Mode, and InMarket ↗Will more data make a robot perfect?
No. People must also test the robot, its sensors, and the job it will do.
Measurement Science for Robotics and Autonomous Systems Program ↗What makes a good location for a data center?
Start with reliable power, a cooling and water plan, good network links, lower site risks, and room to protect nearby people. Check written studies. Cheap land alone is not enough.
DOE: clean energy resources and data-center electricity demand ↗DOE: Best Practices Guide for Energy-Efficient Data Center Design, 2024 ↗FEMA Flood Map Service Center ↗Could a data center go on a military base?
Sometimes. The Army announced conditional selections for two commercial projects in March 2026. A base still needs mission, lease, security, utility, and environmental review. An announcement is not proof that a center is open.
U.S. Army: conditional data-center selections, March 26, 2026 ↗U.S. Army data-center Enhanced Use Lease fact sheet, March 2026 ↗Could a data center go near a prison?
A site near a prison could be studied, but the prison does not make it a good site by itself. Check land rules, power, water, connections, air, noise, and secure operations. Protect people in custody, staff, and neighbors.
Does a military fence make every computer secure?
No. A fence helps control entry. Computer systems still need protection, careful access rules, and testing. The work and the information decide what safeguards are needed.
NIST SP 800-223: high-performance computing security ↗Should all important data sit in one place?
That can create a shared risk. A storm or other outage could affect a main site and its backup. Plans should check whether alternate sites face the same hazards.
NIST SP 800-53 controls: alternate sites and separation, CP-6 and CP-7 ↗Does a nearby power plant mean power is available?
No. The owner and utility must confirm capacity, timing, reliability, and a service agreement. An old wire or former power-plant site is not a promise of a usable connection.
DOE: clean energy resources and data-center electricity demand ↗Is Planetarian systems the name of one science?
Several fields fit this idea. NASA uses Earth system science for Earth's connected air, water, land, ice, and life. Planetary science studies planets and other worlds. We use these common science names in this lesson.
NASA: Earth System Science Research ↗NASA: Planetary Science ↗Are global, national, and geospatial different levels of smartness?
Global and national tell us how much of the world we are studying. Geospatial tells us that the facts have locations. GIS and GeoAI can help at many sizes. A world map and a street map answer different questions.
USGS: What is a geographic information system? ↗U.S. Census Bureau: geographic hierarchy diagrams ↗USGS: GeoAI for topographic mapping, 2021 ↗What is a national spatial data infrastructure?
It is a way for people and groups to share place data using common rules and tools. The U.S. effort is called the NSDI. It includes work across government, business, schools, and other groups.
FGDC: National Spatial Data Infrastructure overview ↗What can GeoAI help people do?
It can help find patterns in place data. USGS research has used AI methods to help map terrain and river networks. People still need to check the data, the results, and how the work will be used.
USGS: GeoAI for topographic mapping, 2021 ↗NIST: AI Risk Management Framework 1.0, 2023 ↗Are AI, AGI, and superintelligence the same thing?
AI is a broad name for computer systems that do tasks such as finding patterns. Researchers use AGI for broad thinking abilities, though definitions differ. Superintelligence, or ASI, describes a possible system with abilities far beyond people. A name alone does not prove those abilities.
Google DeepMind: Levels of AGI, ICML 2024 ↗Google DeepMind: From AGI to ASI, June 12, 2026 ↗NIST: AI Risk Management Framework 1.0, 2023 ↗Can a smart map promise the right answer?
A map or AI model can be wrong. Old facts, missing places, and unfair choices can lead to poor results. Check the sources, dates, place boundaries, tests, and effects on people. Keep checking after a tool is used.
USGS: What is a geographic information system? ↗NIST: AI Risk Management Framework 1.0, 2023 ↗What is an Earth system digital twin?
It is a computer model updated with facts about the real world. It can help people explore what-if questions. The model must be checked. A nice picture alone does not make a model a digital twin.
NASA: Wildfire Digital Twin research, May 21, 2024 ↗Does an intelligence system need artificial intelligence?
No. People can connect records, use maps, count, compare, and apply clear rules without AI. AI is one possible method inside a larger system. A useful system also needs a question, checked facts, responsible people, and a way to learn from results.
USGS: What is a geographic information system? ↗U.S. Commerce Geospatial Strategy, FY2021–2024 / MAF-TIGER example, page 7 ↗Is GIS the same as GeoAI?
GIS connects and studies facts about places. GeoAI uses AI methods with place facts. A GIS can work without an AI model.
USGS: What is a geographic information system? ↗USGS: GeoAI for topographic mapping, 2021 ↗Does national intelligence always mean a government intelligence agency?
No. In this learning site, national often means a whole-country view. Government intelligence agencies have specific duties. National Data System’s public-interest data and publishing work does not claim to be part of those agencies.
NGA: About Us / the formal GEOINT discipline ↗FGDC: National Spatial Data Infrastructure overview ↗How does Consumer Magazine use data journalism?
In the NDS family, Consumer Magazine turns checked records and analysis into stories for everyday decisions. Reporting should explain the sources, method, dates, places, and limits. A catchy cover question is a starting point, not proof of its answer.
European Journalism Centre: The Data Journalism Handbook ↗Did Commerce promise a new geospatial intelligence system by FY2026 or FY2027?
We did not verify that exact deadline. Commerce links a FY2021–2024 geospatial strategy describing existing systems and goals. FGDC separately lists 2026–2027 spatial data infrastructure modernization activities. A plan is not proof that a system has launched.
U.S. Commerce: Data and reports / linked geospatial strategy ↗U.S. Commerce Geospatial Strategy, FY2021–2024 / MAF-TIGER example, page 7 ↗FGDC: SDI Modernization 2026–2027 / planned activities ↗
